The History of Longjing: China's Most Famous Green Tea
The Legend Begins
Longjing tea, also known as Dragon Well tea, has a history spanning over 1,200 years. According to legend, during the Tang dynasty, a monk discovered the tea growing near a dragon-shaped well in the West Lake area of Hangzhou.
Imperial Tribute
By the Song dynasty, Longjing had become a favorite of emperors. During the Qing dynasty, Emperor Qianlong visited the area and personally picked tea leaves, elevating Longjing to imperial tribute status.
Modern Era
Today, Longjing tea remains one of China's most prized teas, with strict quality standards and protected geographic indication status.
